Lake Whatcom waterfront is one of those bodies of water that draws the locals to it on every sunny day.  You’ll find swimmers of all ages, and watercraft of all types.  Lake Whatcom stretches from the edge of Bellingham at Blodel Donovan Park (see pictures below), southward past Sudden Valley towards Glenhaven Lakes and South Bay Drive.  The lake is 12 miles in total length and covers 4,994 acres, and is Washington’s 4th largest freshwater lake.  Lake Whatcom is surrounded by 5 main mountain peaks including Squalicum Mountain (1585 ft) to the north of the lake, Stewart Mountain (3080 ft) to the northeast, Anderson Mountain (3364 ft) to the southeast, Lookout Mountain (2677 ft) south of Sudden Valley, and Galbraith Mountain (1745 ft) southwest of Sudden Valley.

Lake Whatcom makes up Bellingham’s eastern border and provides valuable drinking water to over 85,000 of Whatcom County residents. Some of Lake Whatcom’s most popular areas includes Bloedel, Lakewood, and North Lake Whatcom Park.

Bloedel offers the lakes only boat launch inside city limits, and is well known for swimming and boating. Bloedel has many public facilitys such as BBQ grills, a dog off leash area and a sand volleyball court.

Lakewood has a 4,000 sq. ft. log house containing a boat house, a meets area, locker rooms, and the managers apartment. Lakewood offers hiking trails, a rope obstacle course and picnic tables.

North Lake Whatcom Park is most popular for Hertz Trail. Hertz Trail is an easy walk, 3.1 miles each way. This park includes bird watching, small waterfalls and bicycling.

As you make your way around Lake Whatcom you’ll find the scenic beauty of approximately 36 creeks and tributaries that flow into Lake Whatcom giving it it’s pristine waters.  On the north side you’ll find the saught after neighborhoods of Silver Beach and North Shore Drive.  As you drive the winding and curvy road on the south side of the lake you’ll be inpressed by all the the beautiful homes on Lake Whatcom.  From the peaceful area of Geneva you’ll find some beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountians.  The neighborhood known as Sudden Valley is home to nearly 3000 homes and a wonderful golf course.  Sudden Valley also has a nice marina on Lake Whatcom surrounded by many beautiful homes.
